Book: Media and Global Civil Society

New book possibly of interest

Media and Global Civil Society by Lina Dencik

Much analysis and hope in both academia and political rhetoric currently rests on ideas of deliberation and post-national democratic practices – the roots of a 'global civil society'. This has taken force as not just an analysis of social and political change, but as a normative project. This book has grown out of concern with how changes in media are influencing democratic function and…

Why Avatar is a controversial movie

The critiques and praises for Avatar (2009) over the last two years could fill several pages. The overall project framed its cinematic agents’ involvement in social movements in Brazil in a unique way. The film and its industry are proof of fluidity and fabulist immobility at the same time: the movie came as a response consistent with James Cameron’s overall artistic project but also his self-presentation as a keen traveller. His…

Linguistic implications for race, nation, and fandom in the case of sports superstar of the moment, Jeremy Lin

Written for "Linsanity: What's Behind the Hype?"

The Public Square, a program of the Illinois Humanities Council, worked with the Asian American Resource and Cultural Center at UIC and the Jane Addams Hull House Museum to address some of the issues raised by the recent Jeremy Lin phenomenon. What's behind all the hype? What does this moment say about sports, identity and the cultural landscape in America? How can we use this moment to talk about the issues we should…

Political structured devirtualisation

Is it Possible to Be an Effective Communicator?

Is it Possible?

Building on the discussions in my previous blog posts, I would like to begin this month by reiterating that communication is much more than a mere exchange of information leading to generation of meaning. Anyone who desires to be an effective communicator needs to be aware of the diverse variables that affect communication effectiveness. Then, when one is aware, and has devised their own individual strategies and techniques to effectively address the…

Need for an Indian model of Media Literacy Education

Much of the courses in mass communications in India mainly follow the western model which stresses more on producing human power for the media industry. Whether these courses prepare students to what Senior Journalist, P Sainath says, ‘re-connect with their society and the ordinary people who make it work’ is a debatable topic.

The dichotomy can be stressed by underscoring students are taught about Wilbur Schramm and Lasswell’s models of communication but not the Gandhian…

Impact of Gender on Language and Interpersonal Communication between the Sexes

Until recently, it was believed that men and women actually differ in their language abilities and garrulousness. For example, in 1997, Dr. Phil McGraw, a well-known American psychologist, asserted on the popular TV programme Larry King Live, on CNN, that men use about 1500 words a day while women use about 5000.[1] However, James Pennebaker of the University of Texas and Matthias Mehl of the University of Arizona published a study in 'Science',…
