Hi all,

Someone has just pointed out that RIN have put together a great guide on social media for researchers - you can access the report here:

Hi everyone, just thought to draw your attention to an upcoming training course that may be of interest to those of you who are into mapping social phenomena (social networks, crime etc. anything with GIS) : Geographical data visualization and geodemographics, 9 March 2011, ... The tutors in this course are Professor Paul Longley (University College London) and Dr Alex Singleton (University of Liverpool).

For those interested in online social network sites and organizations, please consider submitting a paper to a workshop that I am co-organizing at the upcoming "Communities and Technologies" conference in Brisbane, June 29-July 2.  Details on the workshop are posted on the C&T web site at: http://ct2011.urbaninformatics.net/program/workshops/workshop-e/.  Extended abstracts of 1500 words are due by April 1, full papers for accepted abstracts by June 1.  We are also in discussions with the editor of Journal of Computer Mediated Communication for a special issue on this topic in conjunction with the workshop.

I'm not sure if this has been posted so forgive if this is a repeat - has anyone worked with lymbix.com? they have various tools for social media analysis and tweet tone has great visualizations.

I'll be testing it out in coming weeks

I'm thinking about creating a course on multiplatform communicating, or the rhetoric of the interface. The goal would be to help students understand how the way you engage with the media technology impacts your understanding of the information being communicated, and what it says about who the intended users are. The idea would be for them to develop multiplatform communication projects, so understanding the role of the interface in content creation and dissemination. So it could draw in literature from various fields: psychology of perception, film studies, HCI, social informatics, etc. If anyone has any ideas for good literature, then I would be glad to hear it.

Josh,

Interesting article on hospitals and social media. A hospital near me recently tweeted an unusual surgery (mind you, the doc who was operating wasn't tweeting at the same time.) The newspaper wrote about it.

Right now, not sure the utility of that, but I think it's good for hospital, health care to play around with social media and figure out what works. Exciting times to be on the ground floor of a new media.
