Yes. Um. US Wars since Nixon have been waged BECAUSE media has been made to be complicit. With the rigorous news pool in place (Rumsfeld) Bush could go ahead with Gulf 'War' 2 and know public 'opinion' was secure. Fox News helped a lot. For more, and free book chapters see http://wethemedia.edublogs.org It traces representatino of terrorism in news broadcasting and as represented in Hollywood cinema since 1976 (Network, Lumet).

in one way, it's very simple:  the role of the mass media is to cover events that happen in the world.  war is an event.  unfortunately, modern wars have been long and drawn out, which makes them too boring for good news coverage.

 

in the much larger sense, the media function as a communication device that helps the actors involved in and surrounding war know what the others are doing and helps them strategize.

 

it's a big question, and there are many more answers.
