Comment by Pamela J Shoemaker on September 27, 2011 at 14:40 in one way, it's very simple: the role of the mass media is to cover events that happen in the world. war is an event. unfortunately, modern wars have been long and drawn out, which makes them too boring for good news coverage.
in the much larger sense, the media function as a communication device that helps the actors involved in and surrounding war know what the others are doing and helps them strategize.
it's a big question, and there are many more answers.
