New blog on music heritage

Asks the question: "What have been the disastrous and successful attempts to preserve, promote, enhance the sonic heritage of a place?"

As i write interpretation texts for the Home of MEtal exhibition at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery i find myself considering the way that public exhibitions are interventions is popular cultural history. What I select from 2 years of research goes forward - what is left out may never be accessed or displayed.

Yes, the media do carry heritage and contribute to constructions/reinforcement of notions around what is and what isn't considered to be heritage. That's why I hope that I'll get some responses to discussion topics I post on here.

i study news in multiple countries/cultures. in fact, cultural significance is part of my definition of news. aren't the mass media carriers of heritage?

If culture is what we do then heritage encompasses what we do to remember the things that have constructed who we are. So heritage is an activity in itself as well as the remembering of an activity or a physical thing such as a building or a bit of paper. Heritage practice is the management, interpratation and presentation of those things.
I'm interested in the way heritage is communicated becasue I am involved in a heritage presentation at a museum and art gallery next year.
The Laurajane Smith book that I have found very useful for this is called Uses of Heritage. That's where I got the quote form for the description of this group and it was reading it that made me think that communicating with others about it through Commspace would be useful. What's your interest in this Pamela?

i'm not familiar with this literature, but it sounds as if it could be useful to me. can you define heritage for me? and what is the relationship between heritage and culture?
