Hi Anne, Nice to see your presence here being involved in a common pursuit of researching the future of PSB. I would be interested in presenting a paper and I am looking forward to learning more about the forthcoming conference in Sydney next year.

I am based in Australia and researching the future of PSBs - and the changing nature and role of public service media (PSM) generally.  I'd like to alert you to a conference next year in Sydney - RIPE@2012 - which will soon call for papers about PSM, on the overall theme of Value for Public Money, Money for Public Value (or very similar).  You're warmly invited to consider submitting an abstract when the call goes out. Once the web site is up and running I'll post the URL to this group.  This is the first time this conference has been held in the southern hemisphere so we're particularly anxious to broaden participation to countries beyond the borders of Europe and North America.  To check out RIPE have a look at its story on http://ripeat.org

In Indonesia, our problem is the less popular of Public Service Broadcasting(PBS). The Indonesian PBS's popularity have been decreasing since the fall of Authoritarian Regime Soeharto Indonesia and the commercial television and radio displaced the PBS's rule. Almost of the Indonesian people also still did not consider the hegemonic of commercial television of which constructed their perception on political, social, cultural and economic realities.

PSB Survival

This discussion will aim to evaluate the role of public service broadcasting (PSB), as beset by opportunities and challenges in today’s India following a sea-change in the broadcasting landscape impacted by the globalisation of television, the Internet, technological advances, socio-economic, ideological and cultural change, and a shift in public expectation.

PSB, the embodiment of quality, education, diversity, impartiality, timeliness, analysis, accuracy and accessibility, is challenged by the proliferation of free-style commercial satellite television channels, audience fragmentation and competition for revenue in a liberalised economic environment.

The mandate for Public Service Broadcasting in India is enshrined in the Prasar Bharati, which is the Broadcasting Corporation of India, represented by Doordarshan, (DD) the national public service broadcaster. Modelled on the BBC DD’s susceptibility to externalities, raises concerns over its future as it is not totally isolated from the direct threats mainly from the vagaries of market economy and competition. Although it has a charter to compete with commercial television the revenue is far from guaranteed because it does not have television licence fees. Contributions are invited to articulate this pressing issue.
