Communicationspace

The media + communication studies network

This is list of academic blogs I enjoy. They are in no particular order, and I'm sure I left off some good ones. But when I think of academic blogs to read, these are the ones I turn to. Feel free to add your own in the comments:

1. The Professor is In. This is a non-nonsense blog from a former tenured prof who tells it like it is. She is very candid and detailed about what to do -- and what not to do -- on the job hunt.

2. Ph.Do. This is a column by Eszter Hargittai, an associate professor at Northwestern University. She offers clear advice for those beginning an academic career, covering such topics as, how to get published and what to do at a conference. She tells you the stuff no one else thinks of telling you because they assume you already know. (For example, how to figure out what journal would be most receptive to your work.)

3. Post Academic. A mused-filled look at the pitfalls and highlights of academe.

4. Versatile Ph.D. This is more of a community and networking spot than a blog, but it offers many resources on finding nonacademic careers for humanities and social science Ph.Ds.

5. Crooked Timber. This is a popular academic group blog with lots of insights on life in academe.
